CONWAY, AR – U.S. Senators John Boozman and Mark Pryor, along with Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-2) today announced that the Conway Municipal Airport will receive $5,796,250 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program to continue construction at its new airport. The funding will be used to pave the runway and to install perimeter fencing.

“Conway’s new airport is vital to job creation in the region.  General aviation airports like this provide many benefits including access for business flights, emergency response, aviation-specific jobs, medical flights, tourism, and air cargo.  I congratulate everyone who has worked so hard to get us to this point,” Boozman said.

“This funding keeps the new airport scheduled for an on-time arrival, and will allow for safer and more efficient travel in and out of Conway.” Pryor said.  “This airport is one of many projects that puts Conway on the map for future job creation and economic growth.”

“This is great news for all of central Arkansas because modern infrastructure is essential for economic growth.  This funding will help increase commerce and private sector job creation in a vibrant region of our state,” Griffin said.

The new airport will replace the Dennis F. Cantrell Field Airport in Conway, which is currently constrained by Interstate I-40 on the east and residential and commercial development on the west, south, and north sides.  Two accidents involving turbojet aircraft motivated the City to move the airport to a safer and more secure location. The new, larger airport will allow for additional traffic and it will be able to accommodate bigger aircraft.  The City of Conway set a goal to open the airport in August 2014.  This funding will move the city one step closer to completing construction on time.
