Second District Academy Day Set

Opportunity to learn about nation's service academies

Feb 14 2011

WASHINGTON –Sens. Mark Pryor and John Boozman and Second District Congressman Tim Griffin today announced details of their Service Academy Orientation Day for the Second Congressional District, to be held on February 24, 2011, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the Little Rock Central High School Library.

Students and their parents will be provided information on the application, nomination, selection, and appointment processes. Representatives will be present to give a short orientation and to answer questions about each academy, including:

  • The United States Military Academy at West Point, New York
  • The United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland
  • The United States Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut
  • The United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York
  • The United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado

“You enter a service academy as a high-achieving student and leave as a strong leader full of opportunity,” Pryor said. “I strongly encourage students interested in serving our county to attend this event and learn more about the application process.”

“Our military academies are an excellent opportunity for young Arkansans to begin a course for a successful future,” Boozman said. “I encourage students interested in exploring the idea of attending one of our military academies to learn more at this event as representatives will be on hand to answer questions, explain academy life and help begin the application process.”

“A service academy education is a great honor, has an estimated value of over $400,000, and has helped develop some of America's finest leaders, both military and civilian,” Griffin said. “The earlier a student begins to prepare for a service academy appointment, the more competitive they will be. I look forward to meeting the future officers of our military at Central High School on February 24.”
