Boozman Appointed To Helsinki Commission
May 24 2013
WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senator John Boozman today announced that he has been appointed to serve as a member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, commonly referred to as the Helsinki Commission.
"Maintaining and building relationships with our allies is important as we work to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. Continuing an open global dialogue helps protect and advance our foreign policy goals as we strive to expand our democratic ideals and shape policies to protect our interests abroad. I am honored to be part of the Helsinki Commission and promote our cooperation with our allies,” Boozman said.
Established in 1976, this independent government agency aims to strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and Europe and works to address and assess democratic, economic, and human rights developments firsthand. The Commission monitors compliance with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). With 57 countries as members from Europe, Central Asia and North America, OSCE is the world's largest regional security organization.
Boozman is uniquely qualified to be a Commissioner on the Helsinki Commission. As a member of the House of Representatives Boozman promoted cooperation with allied countries with his service as a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Parliamentary Assembly (NATO-PA), the British-American Parliamentary Group, and the House Democracy Assistance Commission, now called the House Democracy Partnership.
The U.S. Helsinki Commission panel consists of nine members from the U.S. Senate, nine members from the U.S. House of Representatives, and one member each from the Departments of Defense, State, and Commerce.
