JONESBORO — The coronavirus pandemic has changed internet connectivity from a luxury to a necessity, and Arkansas’ electric cooperatives have been in the forefront of bringing broadband internet to the state’s rural areas.
“The co-ops have a history of pushing Arkansas forward,” U.S. Sen. John Boozman said Tuesday during a visit to Craighead Electric Cooperative Inc. in Jonesboro.
Boozman and Rep. Rick Crawford were in town to announce federal investment in a $104 million project that will connect more than 2,300 users to broadband and build and improve 348 miles of line.
“It used to be that when we talked about economic development, we talked about the ‘Three Rs’ – roads, railways and runways. Now, though, we would have to add broadband internet,” Boozman said.
