WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) released the following statement after the Senate considered a series of amendments that seek to prevent terrorists from obtaining firearms:

“No one wants a situation where known terrorists have guns. However, we must prevent this while protecting the freedoms of law-abiding citizens who are mistakenly placed on the various watch lists maintained by the federal government.

Constitutionally-protected rights of law-abiding Americans cannot be stripped without due process, which is exactly what would happen if the amendments offered by some of my Democrat colleagues today were adopted.

We must keep working to find a common ground that balances these two demands.”

Background: The Senate voted on the motion to invoke cloture on four amendments to the FY17 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Bill: Grassley amendment #4751, Murphy #4750, Cornyn amendment #4749 and Feinstein amendment #4720. All four of the amendments the Senate considered today failed to reach the sixty votes necessary for cloture.
