WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) is working to ensure that the American veterans continue to receive disability compensation and pension payments during the government shutdown.

Boozman is a cosponsor of S. 1563, legislation that directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to continue these discretionary payments during this lapse in funding.

“We need to protect the earned benefits our men and women deserve for sacrificing their lives for our freedoms. Our veterans rely on these services to feed their families and make ends meet and pay for their education. These benefits should not be compromised because of a government shutdown,” Boozman, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs said.

While some veterans’ services continue during a shutdown many other benefits aren’t funded. This legislation protects discretionary programs administered by the VA. These earned benefits include programs for low-income and disabled veterans and educational assistance such as post-9/11 GI Bill and other VA educational programs. The bill would allow the VA to continue to pay these mandatory benefits to veterans.
