WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator John Boozman issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

On federal spending:

“The American people understand that our current spending level is unsustainable. With more than a $1 trillion annual deficit in each of the past two years, Americans are rightfully demanding fiscal responsibility. President Obama’s proposal to freeze discretionary spending is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, we need a more aggressive approach that cuts federal spending to fiscal year 2008 levels. While the President says he is interested in reining in spending we must question his commitment as he makes requests for stimulus style investments that will result in more of the same failed agenda. The President clearly isn’t willing to make the tough decisions necessary to get our nation’s fiscal house in order.”

On job creation:

“The unemployment rate in Arkansas is hovering around 8 percent and hardworking families are struggling to make ends meet. Putting Americans back to work is a top priority for Congress and people all across the country. I am hopeful that President Obama will work to implement policies that will create well-paying jobs. However, we have heard the President promise to focus on the economy and job creation in the past. This has resulted in an unprecedented debt passed to our children and grandchildren.”
