WASHINGTON –U.S. Senator John Boozman issued the following statement in response to President Barack Obama’s deficit reduction proposal:

“America wants to hear ways we can come together to address the economic crisis created by Washington’s excessive spending.  Unfortunately, what the President outlined  in his proposal today was more about pitting sides against each other, instead of unifying us.”

“I agree with the President that we need fundamental tax reform and that we need to close loopholes that favor some corporations.  However, let’s be clear.  What the President is proposing goes well beyond that.  He is proposing a tax hike, the burden of which will be placed on America’s small business owners during a time when our economy is struggling to create jobs.”

“Raising taxes is not the answer.  Washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem.  We cannot tax, borrow, and spend our way to prosperity.  To truly address our nation’s economic crisis, we have to rein in the excessive spending and the growth of government.  It is time we institute a mechanism, like a Balanced Budget Amendment, that will stop the government from spending beyond its means.  If Arkansas can be required to balance our state’s budget, there is no reason that we shouldn’t be able to require Washington to do the same.”
