WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) today called Senate passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) “critical to our national security.”

“We are a nation at war. We must dedicate the necessary resources and ensure that proper steps are taken to defeat ISIS and other radical Islamic terror groups who seek to destroy America. That’s why this bill is so critical to our national security. It shows our bipartisan commitment to ensuring that the men and women of our military are provided with the support they need to combat terrorists and other adversaries overseas, which will keep Americans safer here at home,” Boozman said.

The NDAA supports our wounded warriors and our troops and their families, authorizes increases to combat and troop pay and provides for the equipment necessary to combat ISIS and numerous threats around the world.

The bill also contains a number of important policy provisions related to the continued operation of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo) including an extension of the ban on the transfer of detainees to the U.S., prohibitions on the use of funds to construct or modify facilities in the U.S. for the purpose of housing detainees and limitations on the transfer of detainees to nations where they could return to the battlefield.

“Gitmo is more than serving its purpose for detaining the worst of the worst, obtaining valuable intelligence from detainees and keeping these terrorists who are bent on destroying America from returning to the battlefield,” Boozman said. “As recent reports indicate, former detainees are in fact returning to the battlefield and have been responsible for attacks that have claimed American lives. Transferring detainees is not a viable solution and the Obama administration needs to abandon its intention to decrease the number of prisoners at Gitmo.”
