WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman today announced that the Maddox Bay Rural Fire Department will receive an $18,020 grant from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program to purchase new equipment including a portable generator, ladder, portable pump, hoses, basic hand tools, hose appliances and nozzles, and portable radios. Monroe County suffered severe flooding in 2011, and the Maddox Bay Rural Fire Department lost all of its equipment with the exception of one fire truck.

“The Maddox Bay Rural Fire Department’s volunteer firefighters have shown great resilience as they work to rebuild their program from the ground up,” Pryor said. “This grant will provide them with equipment they need to protect and serve the rural communities in Monroe County.”

“Maddox Bay Rural Fire Department has worked hard to overcome the loss of virtually all its equipment,” Boozman said. “These funds will help fill some of the remaining needs so that first responders will have the necessary equipment to save lives and protect their community.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency is supported by the omnibus appropriations bill and provides fire departments and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) organizations with the tools and resources necessary to protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel. During Fiscal Year 2013, DHS AFG Program awarded approximately $288.8 million directly to local fire departments and EMS organizations.
