WASHINGTON –U.S. Senator John Boozman joined efforts to make English the official language of the United States.

Boozman helped introduce the English Language Unity Act. This legislation would require the federal government to use English for all government operations.

“We are a nation of immigrants but our national identity and culture is firmly grounded in the English language,” Boozman said. “We need to preserve and protect this common thread and that begins with a unifying language that all Americans can use to communicate.”

This legislation would declare that English is the official language of the United States. Furthermore, it would require that all government operations be conducted in English, that an English language test be administered to all people applying for naturalization, and that all naturalization ceremonies be conducted in English.

Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) led efforts to introduce this bill that Boozman cosponsored as well as Senators Johnny Isakson (R-GA), David Perdue (R-GA), Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and David Vitter (R-LA).
